The History of Houses

Ever wonder what the first house looked like and when it was built?

House design varies from different cultures and locations in the world. Each region has its own way of creating their house. For instance, a Hispanic house's structure relies heavily on thick walls and terracotta roof tiles with cellars or basements. Meanwhile, Japanese houses don't have attics, with the belief that it's a waste of precious space, and are commonly created with a roof that is steeply angled. The houses are usually minimalistic but keep that trendy style.

From the birth of the first house to the most technologically advanced design now, let's see how far we have become.

Prehistoric House

Humans during this era thrived in caves. From time to time, they go out to hunt animals for food and while hunting, they make use of what available materials they have to live. They cook food in clay ovens, and they even managed to create shelter out of animal skin, bones and stones.

Saxon Houses

Also called the Anglo-Saxons, they are the first cultural group which inhabited England. Their main work is farming and growing plants. Their home structure resembles the early huts created from wood and has a thatched roof. It is commonly 1 story and has no windows.

Many years later and it sparked a new civilization and birthed the first house made of sun-dried brick walls.

Ancient House

It started with the forefathers of the first civilization. This era introduced houses that could be used as stores since the people heavily relied on mercantilism. In Sumer, now known as Iraq, started the 1 story bungalow type houses with granary and commonly in grid patterns. They used bricks and introduced different methods of creating the structure of a house. They also have standard measures and weights of the bricks used.

Roman Houses

This era started the use of pillars namely, Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian, in any structures they built. This era also introduced the use of monumental architecture. They started to increase the floor level of houses and started creating dome roofs. The civilization is starting to flourish and people are starting to generate ideas for creating new housing designs and patterns.

Modern House

As where we are now, the modernized version of houses are far from the early generations. They can be as high as a single 3-story building depending on the owner's preference. Introduced the use of tiles and good resources. It has access to leisure activities such as pool, gym, sports court and a lot more. It just proves how far civilization has come!

The people are now off to continuously improve the housing structures. Some attempted to create futuristic structures and maximize the use of digital gadgets. Who knows what homes will look like soon? I would want to know as well.
