The best way to have a great time is by getting together with your friends and family, and what better way to do that than hosting a game night? We are going to go over some easy suggestions of games you can play during this time, as well as some useful tips for hosting the perfect game night.
At a typical game night, you should expect there to be plenty of laughter and the occasional tense moment when someone gets eliminated. At the end of the day it’s all about coming together, having fun with new or old friends and challenging each other in every way possible (including through board games).
The following are some of the best board games to play at your next game night.
Scattergories: This one is a classic. It’s a word game that requires you to come up with words that begin with specific letters, as well as words that fit certain categories. Some other categories include names for things you would find in an office or movie titles. You can pick up Scattergories at almost any game retailer or online. In fact, there’s even an app you can download on your phone!
Apples to Apples: This is another fantastic game of wit and strategy. You have to put down cards that are the same, and when you run out of cards, you’re out. The winner is the person who gets their cards down first.
Cards Against Humanity: This is a game where you use offensive language to describe the people at the table. If they use those words on their cards, then they must draw a “card” in order to win!
Takenoko: A style-based strategy card game that pits players against each other by asking them questions about various elements of the game’s setting or characters (think Animal Crossing). The winner is determined by answering questions correctly and getting the most points.
Candy Land: This is a game that’s geared toward younger kids, but it has universal appeal and features some fun twists. It’s a simple game to learn and has various stages throughout the board. While this may not be the most competitive or action-packed for adults, it certainly is fun for everyone else to play!
You can also turn any of these games into drinking games. Simply buy your favorite form of alcohol and/or set up a drink menu and every time someone takes a sip they have to perform one of these tasks:
Take an extra sip if you have something to say (like an answer or guess). Take an extra sip if you are eliminated from the game. Make a joke about your answer (if you don’t laugh then you don’t get to take a sip). Take an extra sip if the judge says something funny.
Another way to include other people in your game night is to hold a “starter night” just before you have the actual game night. This way, people can get to know each other and spend time getting to know one another’s favorite games. You can also include them by asking them questions about their gaming history or preferences so that they have a good idea of what kind of games they would enjoy playing.
